Smithfield Day to be observed this weekend at Church of Abraham

The Church of Abraham, located at 4810 Hickory Fork Road, Gloucester, will hold its first Smithfield Day on Saturday, followed by additional celebration on Sunday.
The Church of Abraham was formed in 2003 from Smithfield Baptist, its mother church. In 2020, the church moved into Smithfield’s sanctuary as the older church “passed the mantle,” handing over its historic building and merging with its membership.
Eileen Davis, who is leading arrangements for the first Smithfield Day, said the event is to celebrate the churches’ joint heritage and the history of Smithfield.
Saturday’s outdoor event is from noon-6 p.m. and will include food vendors, a display of historic items from Smithfield, which dates from 1880. Bounces houses and music are also planned in the celebration, which is open to the public.
“We are honoring our legacy,” Davis said; and that legacy will also look more deeply into the roots, in which Smithfield church was established from Bethel Baptist Church.
