Silversmiths of Virginia will be discussed during the Mathews Museum’s first lecture in its new Friday Speakers Lecture Series on June 7. Shown here, a place setting featuring early Virginia silver.
A first Friday Speakers Lecture Series begins at 7 p.m. next Friday, June 7, at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews.
Tom Karow of Mathews, a silver historian and museum vice chair, will discuss the silversmiths of Virginia prior to 1865. According to a news release, silversmithing was then considered a craft and appreciated as an art form.
Karow will display silver on loan from area dealers and owners, including Virginia silver pieces dating to the mid-18th century silversmiths, the release said.
Karow is president of the Fairfield Foundation and a member of the Mathews VA250 Committee.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
