Precision Safe Sidewalks, a VDOT contracting company, is leveling out uneven places on the sidewalk downtown along Buckley Hall Road. The work is part of a trip hazard mitigation project to bring the sidewalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Here, at left, Mark Trader, crew leader for the North Carolina-based company, sweeps up after leveling a corner of a sidewalk section. At right, he uses a special blade to slice off and smooth out the elevated area, leaving a smooth surface. Some portions of the sidewalk have been replaced, said Mathews Area Headquarters Superintendent Edward Hudgins. Trader said he is marking some additional sections of the sidewalk for replacement, as well.
