Shirley Winston Matthews, 87, passed away Monday, March 23, 2015.

He was born and resided in Mathews County.

He served his country in the Merchant Marine and also in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his service he worked at Ft. Eustis for over 30 years working on all types of aircraft.

He was a member of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Terry Matthews.

He is survived by his children, Brenda Matthews Payne and her husband Stanley and Steven C. Matthews and his wife Holly; his grandchildren, Shane Matthews, Sarah Matthews, William Matthews, Matthew Ryan Payne, Brent Payne, Brooke Payne, and his great-grandchildren, Jean L. Payne and Avelia C. Payne.

  The family will receive friends on Friday, March 27, 2015, in the mausoleum of Windsor Gardens Cemetery from 1-2 p.m. with services starting at 2 o’clock.

Memorial donations may be made to Mathews Volunteer Fire Dept. or Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, Gloucester, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
