Thomas Hunter Middle School teacher Michelle Williams, left, who is heading up the school’s new Family and Consumer Science program, accepts a pair of checks from Ron Lambert, chairman of the Mathews Community Foundation and Mathews Rotary Club’s Community Service Committee. Williams had reached out to both organizations to help fund the purchase of sewing machines to be used by the students. Together, these two donations totaled $1,700 and along with other donations, the community has funded a total of 20 sewing machines for the program. FCS will introduce middle school students to a variety of skills in culinary arts, textile arts, early childhood development, financial literacy, and nutrition and wellness.
