The Mathews High School crew hosted its second of three home regattas Saturday at Williams Wharf. The rowing team netted much improved results over its first regatta just two weeks before, taking seven gold, two silver and three bronze finishes out of 17 entries.
Highlights of the Blue Devils’ performance started with the men’s varsity four, where Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Sam Hutson, Tucker Blackwell and coxswain Brandon Smith recovered from a poor start to pull through Great Bridge-A (GBC 4:47.7) and Gloucester-A (GHS 4:52.2) for a first-place finish (4:42.5) with River City Crew (RCC) and West Potomac (WePo) finishing out the race.
Bill Riley, Matt Oliver, Gus Bauby, Dominic Cummings and cox Josh Miles, who normally race the Blue Devils’ second men’s four, rowed up in the second flight of the men’s varsity four, finishing third behind winner GBC-B and Christchurch School (CCS) and ahead of GHS-B.
