Seven local wrestlers place in VHSL state tournaments

The Mathews and Gloucester wrestling programs advanced to the state tournaments this past weekend, with Mathews placing ninth among Class 1 schools, while Gloucester came in 12th overall against Class 5 wrestlers.
The highest placing athlete from the two schools was Gloucester’s Ethan Baker, who came in third at 182 pounds. GHS had two other wrestlers place among the top six in their respective weight class, while Mathews had a total of four wrestlers place.
Both tournaments were held on Friday and Saturday. The VHSL Class 1 Wrestling State Championships were held at the Salem Civic Center, while the Class 5 tournament was at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Two MHS wrestlers placed fifth—Alexis Deagle (106 lbs.) and Brady Wright (170 lbs.), while two others came in sixth—Cody Deagle (132 lbs.) and Malachi Dixon (195 lbs.).
