Sept. 21 meeting to decide Gwynn’s Island historic designation

The Virginia Board of Historic Resources and State Review Board will hold a joint meeting Sept. 21 to decide if Gwynn’s Island will be designated as a historic district. The meeting will be held in Danville, beginning at 9:30 a.m., and people can attend either in-person or virtually to give their comments to the boards.
Last Thursday, a public information meeting was held at the Gwynn’s Island Civic Center for the Department of Historic Resources to provide more information and for community members to raise concerns and ask questions.
Marc Wagner, DHR Eastern Region Architectural Historian in the Community Services division, informed those in attendance of other Chesapeake Bay islands that have received this designation, including Tangier and Saxis. He also mentioned that Mathews Downtown and Gloucester Downtown have been listed as historic districts since 2017 and 2010, respectively.
