SELMA MITCHEM TREMER

Selma Mitchem Tremer, age 89, of Cobbs Creek, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Heron Cove at Sanders in Gloucester, Virginia.

She was born on February 4, 1935, to Hazel Oliver Mitchem and Charles Lee Mitchem. Selma attended the Church of Saint Therese, Gloucester.

Selma Jean was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Mathews High School, Mathews, Virginia. Upon completing business school, Selma began her career in 1956 with J.C. Wheat & Co., Richmond, Virginia. In 1990, Selma was elected by her peers to become the first female President of the Bond Club of Virginia and additionally served as a member of their Board of Governors. After many years in the investment business, holding multiple positions, Selma retired as Vice President and Branch Manager of Advest, Inc., Kilmarnock, Virginia. Always the consummate hostess, she loved to entertain family and friends at her home, Green Point, on the Piankatank River, Cobbs Creek, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, Selma was predeceased by her eldest brother, Linwood R. Mitchem, and sisters-in-law, Myra Fitchett Mitchem and Jane Broaddus Mitchem. She is survived by her brother, James P. “Jimmy” Mitchem; granddaughter, Jena Zarling (David); nephew, J. Michael Mitchem (Lynnette); nieces, Amy E. Mitchem and Debbie Mitchem Pickwick (David); special cousins, Katie Dutton (Sammy), Phyllis Karas; “Special Sister” JoAnn Yancey (Herb), and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Selma has a daughter, Kathy Noble (Bruce); Grand-Daughter, Karen Wheeler, and five great-grandchildren.

A special “Thank You” is extended to the nursing team of Heron Cove, and to her special private caregivers, whom she loved like family, April Eller and Torrie Walton.

Selma will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, September 6, 2024, at H.C. Smithers Cemetery, 251 Smithers Lane, Cobbs Creek, Va. 23035.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, or the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, is assisting the family.
