Second Mathews team earns spot in state softball tournament

The Mathews County Little League now has two teams that will be competing at the state level this summer.

The Major Softball All-Star Team, composed of 11- and 12-year-old girls, won all four games in the District 15 All-Star Tournament, defeating teams from Northumberland, Essex, and King George (twice) to win a berth in the state tournament. Last week, the Minor Softball All-Star Team earned a chance to compete at their state tournament, as well.

Major All-Stars manager Charlie Crittenden said his girls played good defense, exhibited strong pitching, and scored 34 runs in four games, giving up only six runs throughout the tournament. For three weeks, they either practiced or played games for two to two-and-a-half hours every single day, he said, except for two days that they had to sit out because of weather.

 

"They’re a good group of athletes," he said.

At the double-elimination state tournament, which will be held in Northumberland County beginning at 1 p.m....
