School board member’s comments addressed at hearing

A public hearing on Mathews County’s reassessment and associated increase in property values held last Thursday drew little comment from the public, but provided supervisors’ chairman Dave Jones and Mathews School Board member Bobby Dobson an opportunity to defend remarks Dobson made during the regular meeting held two days earlier.
During that meeting, Dobson had spoken out against the idea of using $307,000 in county funding to pay for repairs to the Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill. Both the March 28 and March 30 supervisors’ meetings were held in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.
“This is ludicrous,” he had said. “People involved in this should be taken out and shot in my book.”
The comment generated quite a bit of backlash, including calls to the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office and the Mathews Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office charging that Dobson had made a threat, well as to the Mathews County School Board, decrying his choice of words. Residents also complain...
