School board members appear poised to make a big ask

Mathews School Board members appear poised to make a big ask of county supervisors in the coming weeks, as they look for an increase of roughly $1 million in local funding for its FY25 budget in order to fund a 6 percent, plus step, increase for its teachers and other school employees.
School board members discussed the budget during the board’s public hearing and work session, held on Tuesday night in the Brooks Auditorium at Thomas Hunter Middle School. While the meeting included a public hearing component, no one from the public addressed the board and only two people were in the audience.
Members of the school board and Mathews County Board of Supervisors will have an opportunity to sit down together to hash out all the budget implications during a joint workshop scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6 in the THMS auditorium.
