During Tuesday night’s Gloucester County School Board meeting, held in the T.C. Walker Education Center auditorium, members discussed the verbiage of policy IIBDA, which addresses the selection and adoption of library materials. The board ultimately voted, 5-1, to keep the policy as presented. The policy was formerly known as IIBD-R.
The policy presented to the board stated that selected library materials would need final approval by the building principal for purchase. School board vice chair Leonne Arsenovic moved that the policy be reworded to state that selected library materials would need building principal approval for budgetary purposes only.
Arsenovic said her reasoning for the change was due to “the possibility that a building principal might x books off a list because they don’t like them.”
She stated her concern for principals becoming the arbiters for what is in the library.
