Rumors abounded in Mathews last week after a phalanx of Virginia State Police cars, along with two bomb squad trucks, were seen in the county before dawn on Tuesday, Nov. 10. But scant information was forthcoming from official sources.
There was talk of helicopters or airplanes flying low over a Port Haywood neighborhood, shouting out for someone to stop, and of police cars driving into a Susan neighborhood, lights flashing.
There has also been talk on social media lately regarding loud booms, along with speculation that maybe there was a drug bust on the water or inland.
Grace Hall of Susan said she saw “lots of vehicles” in her neighborhood before dawn, some with blue lights flashing.
“It wasn’t even daylight when they came,” she said. “When you hear that many vehicles coming at one time, I said it’s time to wake up. Something’s going on.”
But she said she was unable to really see anything, so she just went on about her business.
