Sara Abbitt has been selected as August’s Artist of the Month by the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews.
A recent Mathews High School graduate, Abbitt was accepted into the Art Speaks Juried Exhibition this year, said a press release, citing her inclusion as “an exciting achievement for a young artist.”
Abbitt said that art has always been an escape for her because it helps her “express my deepest, most internal thoughts and desires or to hide away from something I fear.”
She said with painting she can create a world that she doesn’t live in, taking beautiful aspects from this world and painting them “in my wonderful hideaway.” Her favorite subjects are people and animals, and the current show includes both a self-portrait and a painting of her best friend, Cameron, along with various animals, a woman on the beach, and a siren.
“There is simply so much beauty in this world that is so overlooked,” she said, “and I love showcasing these wonderful creatures.
