Sands Smith, 87, of Richmond, passed away July 5, 2011.

He was the widower of Nancy Shackelford Smith, and was also preceded in death by his eldest son, Sands Smith Jr.

He is survived by his children, Kathryn S. Dick, Nan H. Bandura and her husband Steven, William B. Smith, and Joseph T. "JT" Smith and his wife Dalanya; daughter-in-law, Nancy W. Smith, and his grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher, Caitlin, Sands VII, Elizabeth, Nathan, Meghan and Caroline.

Mr. Smith was a lifetime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts for over 50 years. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star during service in WWII.

Sands was always proud of his long Virginia heritage and his roots at Beachland, the family’s ancestral home in Mathews County, Virginia.
