Sgt. 1st Class Samuel A. Ward (Culley), 60, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Aug. 5, 2014.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1953 in Mathews County, and graduated from Mathews High School.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 1995 after 21 years, which included six years as a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Pauline Ward, and sisters, Sylvia Billups and Beverly Ward.

Survivors include his wife, Britta Ward; sisters, Janet Ward, Madelyn White, Edith Turner, Paula Champion, and Ethel Ward; brothers, Paul Ward, Michael Ward and Dwayne Ward.

A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, in Colorado Springs. A Celebration of Life service is planned for a later date in Mathews.
