Sal’s Sicilian Pizza and Restaurant is now under new ownership. Maria Amato and Pietro Catania of Hayes obtained ownership of the business late last year. The business was previously owned by Tony DiPaola, Francesco Leone, Vince Failla and Vince Bua.
“At first I was nervous,” Amato said about taking over ownership of Sal’s. “I was scared. We never had a restaurant (that was) ours.”
Amato and Catania have been married for 21 years and have four children: Giada, Simone, Sal and Alessia. The family moved to the United States from Italy in 2022. They previously worked at a restaurant in Kilmarnock called Anna’s Italian Restaurant, owned by Amato’s brothers, Andrea and Sal Amato, for almost three years. There they gained more experience in the restaurant business. At Anna’s, Amato worked as a waitress, Pietro worked in the kitchen and their son Sal would help in preparing the pizzas.
Amato said that they taught them well.
