RUPERT JOSEPH ‘JOE’ JOHNSON JR.

Rupert Joseph “Joe” Johnson Jr., age 77, of Port Haywood, Va., passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025. Born on May 15, 1947, Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family.

Joe proudly served in the Marine Corps Reserve and was honored to contribute to his country. He graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, where he developed skills that would serve him well throughout his career. After leaving the shipyard, Joe worked as a waterman in Poquoson, embracing the hard work and traditions of the water and becoming deeply connected to the community.

He always enjoyed being on the water, where he found peace and solace in the simplicity of nature. Joe was also a lover of good seafood, especially when it was prepared by his wife, Paula, whose cooking he always adored.

Joe’s favorite times of the year were the holidays, when family would come home for visits. Those gatherings were filled with warmth, laughter, and love, and Joe took great joy in having everyone together, sharing stories and making memories.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Paula Johnson; his son, Danny Johnson; his daughter, Darlene Johnson North (husband Leigh); his grandchildren, Emma (husband Kyle), Kelsey (husband Conner), Jameson, and Jacob; and his great-grandson, Lee; his sister, Jane Abbott, and nephew, John (Anna). Preceded in death by his parents, Rupert and Maxine Johnson, and nephew, Daniel Henry Abbott.

A gathering for family and friends will be hosted at Paula and Joe’s home, 4885 New Point Comfort Highway, 23138, on April 12, 11-3. Please join us to raise a glass in a spirit of good cheer, honoring Joe’s life and legacy.
