Demolition of existing elements is underway on the Route 3/14 westbound bridge over Burke Mill Stream near the Mathews/Gloucester line. The bridge deck has been removed completely.
Darragh Frye of the Virginia Department of Transportation said, “Demo work is anticipated to take two months to complete. Crews will then replace the bridge deck, beams, bridge railings, guardrails and roadway.”
Frye said the $5.5 million project remains on track to open the road and improved structure to traffic by November.
The bridge project got underway in July 2024, with the first stage involving redirected traffic flow. Temporary crossings were created on both sides of the westbound bridge which have diverted traffic into a two-way stream over the eastbound bridge while the project is underway.
Also, lefthand turns from Route 3, Windsor Road, onto Route 14 eastbound have been temporarily prohibited.
