Thomas Hunter Middle School seventh and eighth grade physical education teacher Allie Robins is in the third year of teaching the health and skill benefits of organized rowing. P.E. students are bused to the crew facility at Williams Wharf for a two-week, one-hour rowing block in either fall or winter. Robins was a decorated MHS and Mobjack rower (Class of 2005) and continued a distinguished rowing career as an honors scholarship athlete at the University of Tulsa. Last week, Robins brought in guest speaker Doug Sier (shown above), also a successful MHS and MRA rower (2003) who continued rowing at State University of New York, Maritime. Sier, like other Mathews Rowing alums Robins has invited, told the young group of the competitive and life skill lessons he learned from rowing at Williams Wharf and how those experiences shaped his life. Sier is now a Merchant Marine Captain, commanding the U.S. flagged, 853 foot container ship, Rio Grande Express, on a U.S. East/Gulf Coast to Northern Europe run.
