The Mathews Rotary Club, in partnership with Chesapeake Bank, is celebrating heroes with a spectacular visual display of over 100 American flags and, with the community’s support, the possibility of many more.
Each flag in the “Flags for Heroes” project will fly from 10-foot poles in the open lot on Main Street near the new HRSD building for all to see and enjoy.
All the flags will be raised Nov. 2 and will be displayed until Nov. 14. Net proceeds from Flags for Heroes will benefit community projects conducted by the Mathews Rotary Club.
Club president Karl Braun spoke about what having a field full of American flags represents. “In a unique place like Mathews, we have so many heroes,” Braun said. “Of course, we want to recognize our first responders (EMTs, firefighters, and sheriff’s department), nurses and doctors who do so much for us every day but also in these difficult times, it’s also about those everyday workers that have touched our lives in a profound way.
