Ronald McRae Flowe, 76, died peacefully at home on March 21, 2023 after a long illness. Born and raised in Norfolk, Va., Ron developed a love of language and learning early in life—and these loves endured. He was graduated from Norview High School, Old Dominion University, and the College of William and Mary. Settling in Gloucester Point, he spent his entire career in education having taught every grade level from pre-K to graduate school. He served many years in administration at Gloucester Intermediate School, West Point High School, and Gloucester Montessori School. In addition, he held several regional leadership positions for education organizations and associations. His career’s passion was making learning a safe, fun, and engaging experience for all students.
His life’s passion was his family. He met his wife Karen in junior high, and their fates were entwined from then on. He adored being “Pop” to his children and grandchildren, creating games and tailoring life lessons to each of them in turn. He was known for rounding up neighborhood dodgeball games, being a card shark, and creating mischief in the best possible way.
Ron was quick with a pun and loved a good laugh. He was a trivia whiz and enjoyed surprising students and friends with his knowledge of movies and music. He volunteered with Abingdon Episcopal Church, Arts on Main, and other community organizations to make the world around us a kinder, happier, and more beautiful place.
Ron was predeceased by his parents, Boyce and Emily Flowe; his brother, Charles Flowe, and his devoted mother-in-law, Margaret Smith. He is survived by his wife, Karen S. Flowe; his daughter, Kristin Swanlund (John); his son, Adam Flowe (Mollie), and his four grandchildren, Sam, Eva, Libby, and Charlie. He is also survived by his nephews and their families; his great-nieces and great-nephews; his sister-in-law, and many cherished friends.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on April 15, 2023 at Abingdon Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please support your local public schools/colleges or arts foundations.
