Robert Stanley Diggs of West Point, Va., died Sunday, June 30, 2013.
He was born July 7, 1924 on Gwynn’s Island to the late Robert Emmett H. Diggs and Katie Brownley Diggs.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in World War II, the Korean War and in the Naval Reserve until 1963.
He married Mary Carolyn Diggs in 1947 and they made their home in Baltimore, Md., where their four children were born. The family moved to West Point, Va., upon Bob becoming the owner and operator of the family business, E.H. Diggs & Son Seafood, which he ran until selling it in 1987.
After retirement, he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in financial planning. Bob served on the West Point Town Council and King William Board of Supervisors for many years.
Bob is survived by his children, Janet Chirgotis (John), Allison Diggs Bourland (Michael), and Paul Diggs (Mary); grandchildren, Katie and Evan, Alex and Eva, Graham, Bennett, Eliza and Sophia.
The family would like to express gratitude to their dad’s caregivers, especially Claire Weil.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, July 5, at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, Va.
