Robert Bowers Mayo, April 26, 1933-January 25, 2025, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Harcum, Va., was a graduate of St. Christopher’s School in Richmond and a Navy veteran, having served with distinction in the Korean War. He earned a degree from Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). In his professional career, he was a curator for the Jamestown Festival Park; Exhibits Designer for Archives and History (NC); and Director of the Valentine Museum. His passion for art led him to open Gallery Mayo. In 1956, Bob married Margaret Gwynn Thomas, who survives him. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. John Allen Mayo of Warrenton, Va.; daughters, Pamela Mayo (James Rogansky) of Sewickley, Pa., Mary-Beth Johnson (Michael) of Mechanicsville, and Meg Mayo of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two devoted granddaughters, Grace Rogansky and Alexis Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Newton T. and Mary D. Mayo. Bob was a member of Olive Branch Global Methodist Church, Harcum, and a passionate enthusiast of fly-fishing, hunting, postal history and art collecting. A service of remembrance will be held on February 1, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Lebanon Methodist Church in Hanover, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Olive Branch Global Methodist, Gloucester, Va., Lebanon Methodist, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Trout Unlimited or the Tunnel to Towers. His friends and family will remember him for his jovial nature and unwavering generosity. Tight lines, Bob!
