Robert “Bob” Palmer Bishop, age 95, of Yorktown, died on Monday, July 29, 2024. Bob was born on February 4, 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was a proud retired U.S. Navy veteran of 30 years. Bob entered the Navy in 1948 and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. One of his proudest tours of duty was serving as the Captain of the USS Banner from 1965 to 1967. The Banner was an intelligence-gathering ship (the first in its class and the sister ship to the USS Pueblo). Lt. Bishop conducted 13 missions off the coasts of Russia and Korea during the Cold War. If you had a few minutes, or even if you didn’t, Bob would love to tell you his sea stories. LCDR Bishop’s last tour of duty was at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown. He retired from the Navy in 1978. He loved Yorktown and made it his home in retirement for the next 46 years. He was a member of the Shriners Lodge and has served as President of the Residents’ Council at Harmony on the Peninsula for the past seven years. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Ann. He is survived by his daughters, Deb Bishop (Myles Guber) and Cheri Baird (David), and three grandchildren, Michael, Halle, and Sam Guber. A joint graveside service for Bob and Mary Ann will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
