Road safety improvement work begins at Woods Cross Roads

Work was scheduled to have begun on Monday on safety improvements at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 610 (Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road).
The project, which has an expected end date of Dec. 16, will cost $5.1 million, funded with federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds. West Point’s Curtis Contracting, Inc., is contractor for the project.
The new design prohibits left turns out from side streets and through movements from side streets across the intersection. This will reduce the number of points where vehicles can cross paths and potentially collide, a release stated. Nearly 70 percent of the crashes at this intersection between 2014 and 2024 resulted in serious injuries or fatalities.
When work is completed in December, drivers on Woods Cross Road or Davenport Road seeking make a turn left onto Route 17, or drive through the intersection, will instead begin by making a right turn.
