Gloucester High School tennis player Christine Riddett won the Peninsula District women’s singles crown on Friday, defeating tourney second-seed Brittany Roberts of Bethel 6-1, 6-0.
Not reflected in the final score was Riddett’s successful effort to come back from 0-40 four times in the heated match. Although she swept a match with Roberts earlier in the season, Riddett said she knew not to underestimate opponents as she did the previous year, when she was eliminated during the semifinal round.
"I was awfully nervous, but I really wanted to go out with a bang this year, as it is my last," said Riddett, who is on track to complete her high school studies in three years and graduate in August. Riddett defeated number four seed Cassie Ardern, Kecoughtan’s number one player, 6-3, 6-1 last Thursday to reach the finals.
