Richard Wesley “Dickie” Belvin, 80, of Gloucester died on Monday, October 2, 2023. He was born to Enoch and Virginia Belvin of Yorktown, Va., and raised on the shore in Dandy, Va.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Mathews Belvin of 51 years; grandchildren, Jessica Ireland and Ricky Ireland, and brothers, John S. Belvin and Robert “Bobby” Belvin.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara Belvin Firth and her husband Claude “Bubba” Firth; children, David Tennant, Dawn Belvin Kovalcheck and husband John and Barbi Belvin Gamble and husband Dan; grandchildren, Jordan Gamble Scott, Taylor Gamble, Kendall Gamble, Ashleigh Ireland, Tiara Ireland and her husband Christopher Dalton, and great-grandchildren, Ashlynn, Chloe, Hannah, Braiden, Rose, Colton, Caleb, Harrison and Hudson.
Dickie was an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent his childhood on the waters of the York River and the Chesapeake Bay learning to fish and duck hunt, earning several fish citations. He was a successful trapper, deer and turkey hunter, mastering the bow, rifle and muzzleloader. He was as talented with his hands as his brothers, father and grandfather before him, and was always quick with a joke and a good story!
A private celebration of his life will be held in his honor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
