Richard Martin Bingman, 78, formerly of Cumberland Valley, Pa., died Feb. 9, 2015 at home in Gloucester, Va.
Born Aug. 13, 1936 in Londonderry Township, Pa., he was the oldest son of the late Richard A. and Mildrid L. (Nave) Bingman of Cumberland Valley.
Richard trained and served with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and later became a radar repair specialist assigned to the Yukon Command’s 581st Radar Unit at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Richard retired at the age of 59 after 35 years with National Service Industries, Inc. He also served for 18 years as an auxiliary police officer for the city of Hampton, Va., achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant and receiving the 1994 Officer of the Year award. He enjoyed woodworking and riding his Harley, but especially loved spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his wife, Edith (Karns) Bingman of 59 years; his daughter, Jeri Susan Pierce and husband Michael; brothers, Ray Bingman and wife Betty, and Roy Bingman and wife Marlene; sister, Carol Belfiore and husband Frank. Richard is also survived by two grandchildren, Michael Ray Pierce and wife Pamela, and Richard Darnell Pierce and wife Stephanie; and four great-grandchildren, Sophia, Tommie, Gabriella and Michael.
A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Wayne Duck will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 1-2 o’clock at the funeral home.
