Three residents have received citations recently from the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament for their catches.Carson Crowder of Gloucester caught and released a 47-inch red drum in the North River on May 9, while fishing with crab.
Daniel McFarland of Gloucester caught a 5-pound, 7-ounce trout in Mobjack Bay on May 7, fishing with crab, to qualify for a citation.
Mark Ottarson of Bohannon caught a 5 pound, 5 ounce speckled trout on April 23 in Mobjack Bay.Two residents checked in citation sheepshead on Saturday at Morningstar Marinas in Mathews. Shannon Wheeler caught is 10.11-pound fish near Wolf Trap, and James Cox Shelton reeled in a 10.6-pounder in the Rappahannock River.
Free fishing days
Under Virginia law, June 7-9 are Free Fishing Days, with no license required for recreational fishing in salt or fresh waters.
According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, 2,900 miles of stocked trout streams, ponds, lakes and reservoirs will also be opened.
