Bethel Baptist Church in Sassafras held a memorial tribute to the late Michael Wayne “Pastor Mike” Jackson on Saturday, installing and dedicating a pastor recognition marker to honor his years of service to the church, from Nov. 18, 2008 to Dec. 9, 2017, the date of his passing. Here, the Rev. Stevens Burrell, at left, a member of one of the Bethel founding families, gives a blessing and dedicates the marker. Church historian Dr. Dorothy Cooke, Center right, spearheaded and organized the tribute and purchase of the marker. Special invited guests were John Gordon, owner of Gloucester’s Chick-fil-A, Neal Steele of WXGM Radio, and the Rev. Dr. Walter Roy of St. Luke Baptist Church in Plum Point, Virginia. The Rev. James L. Harris, Bethel pastor, gave the welcome, the Rev. Dr. Cora Harvey Armstrong provided music, and Trustee Harold Howard and Deacon Nathaniel R. Cooke led the processional and unveiled the marker.
