Remembering Captain Sally

Members of Captain Sally Tompkins United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter 2626 placed a wreath on her grave in memory of her birthday. Tompkins, a Confederate nurse and the first woman formally inducted into an army in American history, is buried at Christ Church cemetery, Mathews. She was born on Nov. 9, 1833 at Poplar Grove Mill and House. UDC members shown at the cemetery are, from left, Martha Rhodes, Susan Fauver, Marilyn Iglesias, Gwen Wood, Diana Swenson, Lynn May and Martha Frame.
