Regional broadband partnership considered

Excitement and urgency regarding the possibilities and need for broadband coverage in Mathews marked a meeting of the Mathews County Broadband Advisory Board last Thursday.
After receiving information from Gloucester Assistant County Administrator Carol Steele, the board decided to ask the Mathews County Board of Supervisors to approve a three-county broadband partnership consisting of Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex. If all three county boards support the idea, they will apply together for a $1.1 million Virginia Telecommunications Initiative grant for a project that could serve around 340 homes in Mathews. The matching grant would require buy-in from each county, with the Mathews share possibly in the $100,000 range.
The advisory board also decided to ask supervisors to approve issuance of a request for proposals for a consultant to help guide Mathews through the process of seeking grant funding and to give advice on the best path forward.
