There are many ways in which people have been posthumously honored. Severn Church in Gloucester thought the work of the Joyful Hands Circle had several reasons to publish “Stirring Up Memories: Favorite Recipes of Elsie Dame (1930-2024).”
Miss Elsie, as she was called by friends and neighbors, had been a lifelong member of Severn Church. She took office at the age of 21 on the executive council of women, served many years as vice president and president, and in all put in 55 years with the women’s circles.
During all of her years working for and serving the church, Elsie often showed her love of others through her cooking and “serving the flock.”A few memories of Elsie were given by several of the Joyful Hands Circle members. Sister-in-law Ruth Gwyn recalls the day she got off the bus at the family home. She was dating Elsie’s brother Joe (they later married). “I remember Elsie saying, ‘Take off your coat and sit down.’ She put two bags of potatoes in front of me and said, ‘Peel.’”
