Raymond Franklin Shackelford was born to Eva Haynes Shackelford and Raymond M. Shackelford on Sept. 3, 1942 in Newport News, Virginia.
He died on Jan. 1, 2023, after a battle with cancer. He lived on Ridge Road in Mathews County his entire life. He married Cynthia E. Fraser Burton on Dec. 31, 1983.
Raymond graduated from Mathews High School, and worked at Newport News Shipbuilding until a tragic car accident.
Raymond farmed with his good friend, Robert Respess Sr.
Raymond was baptized in the East River, and was a trustee, a deacon and treasurer of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Raymond was an avid fox hunter all his life. He liked nothing better than to hear his hounds run. In recent years, he enjoyed hunting with his son-in-law and grandsons.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Cynthia Burton-Shackelford; his daughter, Laura; his son-in-law, Holt Ripley, and his two beloved grandsons, Harrison and Jameson Ripley.
He is also survived by other family members, including the children and grandchildren of Judy Mae and Glenn Burroughs, Edward Oliver, and his cousin, Joy Bowden. In addition, he is survived by many adults and children that were touched by his love and kindness.
The visitation will be at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews on Thursday, Jan. 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. The funeral will be on Friday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial to follow in Trinity Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Mathews Fire Department.
