The Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club will set up a special event station Saturday at the Abingdon Park on Powhatan Drive in Hayes.
The event, celebrating Captain John Smith and the success of explorers of this region, starts at 10 a.m.
According to club vice president Dean Marzocca, John Smith, one of the 1607 settlers of Jamestown “became the president of the Jamestown colony in 1608 and is known for mapping the Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding areas, contributing to the understanding of the geography of the region. His leadership, writings, and exploration efforts helped shape the future of the English colonies in North America.”
The radio club plans to contact other stations around the world and convey the successes of this region in Virginia, Marzocca said.
