An exhibit of 30 quilts from the same family opens this Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Mathews Museum, located at 200 Main Street in Mathews Court House.
“Threads of Our History: Quilts of Mathews Virginia” showcases the private collection of Mathews residents Jay Black and his wife, Lori Jackson Black, a historian and genealogist.
It is believed that the two oldest quilts in the collection were made by Buena Vista Diggs, 1847-1931, a release said. The precise dates of the quilts are not known, other than the fabrics are estimated to date back to the 1860s.
As part of the three-month show, Lori Black, a historian and genealogist, will detail her work in discovering, researching and telling stories about the quilt collection.
Accompanying the quilts will be journals, letters and notes, and some photographs, explaining the provenance of the quilts.
The museum will also offer vintage quilts, some gently used, for purchase, and hold a raffle for a quilt.
