Public comment meeting next week for Machicomoco State Park

A public comment meeting for Machicomoco State Park, Hayes, will be held at 6 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 20.
The meeting will be hybrid and those attending in person will meet at T.C Walker Education Center Auditorium located at 6099 T.C. Walker Road in Gloucester.
In accordance with the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is preparing a master plan for Machicomoco State Park located in Gloucester County. The purpose of a master plan is to guide the management and development of a park by identifying natural, cultural and physical resources as well as identifying park needs and engaging with the public.
The park runs along the York River about 10 miles downriver from Werowocomoco, the village that was the headquarters of Powhatan, the paramount chief of Tsenacomco. Machicomoco means “a special meeting place” in the Algonquin language of the Tsenacomoco tribes. Machicomoco is Virginia’s 40th state park.
