Upwards of 200 people participated in Family Port Fun Day in Mathews on Sunday to celebrate the opening of the new pickleball and basketball courts, as well as the new playground equipment and playground surfacing material, at Port Fun.
Sponsored by Mathews County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the event included pickleball instruction, basketball activities, playground games and activities, and a scavenger hunt.
“It was a really fun day,” said Jan Towne of the advisory committee. “We had such a good turn-out. People were really glad we did this.”
Parks and rec chair Nick Koch welcomed those who attended and performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the pickleball courts.
Supervisor Mike Walls, whose advocacy was instrumental in the development of the new courts, thanked everyone who helped bring the project to fruition, including current supervisors Janice Phillips, Tom Bowen, Tim Doss, and and Dave Jones, and former supervisors Paul Hudgins, Melissa Mason, and Jackie Ingram.
