This year’s Police Unity Tour will make its way along Route 17 in Gloucester earlyFriday afternoon, according to Lt. Damon S. Radcliffe of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
The main purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Its secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. On Friday, survivors and law enforcement officers from all over the country will ride bicycles through Hampton Roads. They will begin this three-day, 250-mile memorial ride in Norfolk and travel to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This year’s group consists of approximately 100 cyclists, 30 motor officers, and 60+ support personnel. Riders will take part in a send-off ceremony at 7 a.m. Friday at Town Point Park. The group is expected to reach Yorktown Beach between 10 a.m. and noon.
