The Mathews Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission held a joint meeting Tuesday night in the historic courthouse to conduct two public hearings issues, including one on the conditional use permit for a 9,100-square-foot retail store (Dollar General Market) proposed by Rhetson Companies, Inc.
As presented by interim Planning & Zoning Director James Knighton, the store is proposed to be built at 1909 Buckley Hall Road in the Cobbs Creek/Dutton area beside the FasMart gas station.
Planners and supervisors alike expressed support for the proposed Dollar General. “That end of the county really has no service,” said planner Dan Hill about the lack of a grocery store option in that area of Mathews. Supervisor Mike Walls said he visited a Dollar General in Florida and that store included a produce and meat section.
“The produce section was second to none,” said Walls. “The meat department was second to none. We absolutely need another grocery store in this county....
