The Mathews County Planning Commission held a lengthy discussion about tiny homes at its Nov. 12 meeting in the historic courthouse.
Bobby Andrade, the county’s new planning and zoning director, explained that Mathews has no regulations regarding tiny homes and suggested the commission might want to consider creating a definition to describe what a tiny home is.
He also said members might want to determine in which zoning districts such homes would be allowed, whether they must be on foundations or can have wheels, and whether septic, well, and electric would be required.
Andrade provided information about the way tiny homes are regulated in other localities, including those that have established minimum sizes ranging from 88 square feet to 900 square feet, have allowed ceiling heights as low as 6’8”, and have made electricity, septic and water optional.
There appeared to be consensus among members that the matter should be a topic for further discussion and possible action.
