Phillip L. Wetterling, 77, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 28, 2011, at his home in Mathews, Va.
Phil was born March 11, 1934 in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Ted and Leona Wetterling. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1952; from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1957; from Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute in 1960, and from Asbury College in 1962. He retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in 1996 after 36 years of service. Phillip was a member of the First Friends Church for over 30 years.
Phil leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Lydia; his daughters, Joan Close and husband David of Denver, Colo., and Carol Bullock and husband Roddy of Cincinnati. Ohio; five grandchildren, Jessica Close, Natalie Bullock, Nathan Bullock, Lydia Bullock and Meredith Bullock; and two great- grandchildren, Addison and Porter Luce. He is survived by a sister, Marita Bradley of Nebraska and her children, Larry, Renee and Diane, and two brothers, Aaron Wetterling of Oregon and his children, Nolan and Larissa, and John Wetterling of Washington and his children, Scott and Eric, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Betty Edwards of Mathews and their daughter, Lisa Gayle of Gloucester, and Joe and Lynda Forrest of Lanexa and his children, Robyn and Jason.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 31, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday. April 1, 2011, in the funeral home chapel with interment to follow in Milford Cemetery.
