Brigadier General (ret.) Phillip H. Mason Jr., 82, of Methuen, Mass., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.

He was born in Cash, Va., and was the son of the late Phillip Howard and Mary (Hogg) Mason.

General Mason was raised and educated in Cash. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and retired as a Brigadier General after 36 years of service. After his retirement he worked for Raytheon Corporation. He was a member of Andover Rotary Club and attended St. Augustine’s Church, Andover, Mass.

General Mason was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Frances Gallogly, who passed away in 1995.

He is survived by his children, Colonel Patrick H. Mason and his wife Lisa of Madison, Ala., Cathy Torres and her husband Rick of Andover, Mass., Susan Breton and her husband Joel of Fremont, N.H., and Sheryl Lomasney and her husband Tim of Andover, Mass.; his step-children, Tim Martin and his wife Cathy of Warwick, R.I., and Amy Martin of Warwick, R.I.; his wife, Barbara (Tanzola) Mason; his brother, William Mason and his wife Eleanor of Niceville, Fla.; his sisters, Mary Udell Miller of Gloucester, Va., and Betty Thorp and her husband Steve of New Port Richie, Fla. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

More than anything he was proud to be an American and loved his family.

Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 4-8 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. His funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at St. Augustine’s Church, 43 Essex St., Andover. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
