Peninsula Campaign topic of talk next week

Local author and historian Jeff Toalson will give a talk on the lower Virginia Peninsula from Fort Monroe to Richmond during the opening year of the Civil War on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Olivia’s in the Village, 6597 Main Street, Gloucester.
Toalson will share personal and intimate thoughts from his new book on the Peninsula Campaign and how it affected citizens in Gloucester, Mathews, Yorktown, Williamsburg and Fort Monroe in 1861-1862. His talk will include transcripts of ordinary people as they endured the effects of a war taking place in their own backyard. He will close his presentation by reading from the diary of Rebecca Diggs of Mathews County.
Luncheon will begin at noon. The presentation is free; each attendee will pay for their own meal. Books will be available for purchase for $25, cash or check.
