Patricia Dorothy Ferguson Feurer, born on May 9, 1932, in Tampa, Florida, graced this world with her warmth and kindness until she peacefully departed from her home in Gloucester, surrounded by her adoring family, on December 6, 2023. Her life was a testament to love, dedication, and unwavering support for those she cherished. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Letrecia “TC” Moore of Deltaville, Va.; her brother, Thomas R. Ferguson of Jacksonville, Florida, and son-in-law, James F. Clements of Gloucester.
Patricia, affectionately known as “Buster” to her beloved husband Walter, shared a remarkable love story that began when they met during Walter’s service in the United States Navy. Their bond was instant, and two weeks after meeting, they eloped, forging a union that lasted 72 years. Walter and Patricia’s travels revealed a profound love for Cheatham Annex, in Williamsburg, Virginia, a place they held dear, especially when Walter served as the Conservation Ranger.
Devotion to family and community defined Patricia’s life. She was a pillar of support, volunteering tirelessly as a Girl Scout leader, Bible school teacher, and PTA volunteer. Her commitment extended to being an enthusiastic athletic and band booster at various schools. Patricia’s presence at her children’s and grandchildren’s events was unwavering, attending every cross-country track meet and band concert, offering heartfelt encouragement.
Her faith was committed, evident in her participation in Bellamy United Methodist Church and the XYZ Circle, where she engaged in Bible studies and cherished moments of spiritual reflection through her love for Guidepost Daily Devotional Books.
A talented seamstress and skilled crocheter, Patricia’s hands created beauty, especially seen in the meticulously handmade wedding dresses for her daughters and bridesmaids. Her involvement in the River Country Quilters group and the Order of the Eastern Star showcased her dedication to crafting and community involvement. She especially enjoyed volunteering at Walter Reed Convalescent Center and Petsworth Elementary School.
Patricia’s wholehearted commitment to family extended to her role as the matriarch of the Feurer family, blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Her love for adventure and nurturing childhood wonder was evident in her belief in the magic of fun-filled family outings and the simple pleasures of a picnic and peanut butter sandwiches.
In her honor, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, reflecting Patricia’s dedication to community service.
Patricia Dorothy Ferguson Feurer’s legacy of love, selflessness, and dedication will forever be cherished by her loving husband, Walter; her children, Teresa Clements (James), Cynthia Thomas (George), Walter E. Feurer Jr. (Amy), and her son-in-law, David Moore (TC); her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ferguson (Thomas) of Jacksonville, Florida, as well as nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ronald Haggerty and the Riverside Hospice staff for their compassionate care shown to Patricia during her final days.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2023, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, 4870 Chestnut Fork Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
Visitation with the family was an hour prior to services.
