A class is planned in Mathews for people wanting to know the basics of oyster gardening.
Dr. Richard Siciliano, a master oyster gardening representing Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association, will teach the free 90-minute class at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the Mathews Land Conservancy Community Building, 1039 Williams Wharf Road, Mathews.
The local session is one of a series that TOGA is offering to let people know the basics of growing oysters.
Other classes have been announced as follows:
March 31, 5 p.m. Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Hague;
April 12, 10 a.m., Northumberland Public Library, Heathsville;
April 26, 10 a.m., Camp Kekoka, Kilmarnock;
May 17, 9 a.m., Camp Kekoka; and,
June 21, 10 a.m., Northumberland Public Library.
The class (Oysters 101) covers the basics of growing oysters, assessing water suitability, acquiring seed oysters and supplies, applying for a non-commercial Virginia oyster garden permit, choosing oyster floats and cages, and harvesting oysters.
