Under the leadership of Danny Wright, the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club will again honor Mathews County’s own Capt. Sally Tompkins with the group’s annual on-the-air special event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. This year’s event will be held at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven, 63 Mill Point Road, Hudgins. The history of Captain Sally’s heroic efforts during the Civil War will be shared with the world via ham radio. Between 1862 and 1865 she treated 1,334 ill or wounded soldiers losing only 73 with a very low mortality rate of only 5.5 percent. The public is invited to attend.
