Offshore wind proposal now in permit stage

A commercial wind project being proposed by Dominion Energy for a site off the coast of Virginia Beach is now in the permit stage, and Dominion is requesting a Clean Air Act Outer Continental Shelf air quality permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The draft document was submitted to the EPA on Jan. 29 and will be open for public comment through Feb. 29.
If approved, the project will be the largest offshore wind facility in the United States, featuring up to 176 wind turbines located 26 to 38 nautical miles from the coast. It is expected to generate 2,640 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power 600,000 homes, said a press release from EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Adam Ortiz.
Information about the project can be found at www.epa.gov/va/public-hearing-and-public-comment-period-coastal-va-offshore-wind-commercial-projects-draft-caa, along with registration information to attend the hearing or testify and a link to make online comments.
